Discuss amongst yourselves please and I look forward to your answers…
A couple weeks ago, I was with my 10-year-old son at an indoor sports facility as I push him on the path to the Major Leagues spend way too much money on youth sports.
Between swings, I looked over and watched a group of boys work out with a quarterback trainer. I swore I recognized the coach of the group and I walked a bit further over to get a closer look. Lo and behold, it was none other than Anthony Morelli.
I’ll let some of you pause for your snickers or uproarious laughter here. I won’t join you and I’ll explain why in a moment.
Still, I was struck and watched a little bit more as he worked with those kids. More than that, it prompted a few different story ideas for this BSD blogger. But I workshopped and workshopped and the ideas I was working with just never came out exactly the way I wanted.
But the biggest thing that seeing Morelli made me think about was how time changes our perception of players for our favorite teams. Upon his enrollment, he was viewed as a potential savior. During those two years of starting, he was the scapegoat for some disappointing losses. With more than a decade having now passed, it’s easier to see No. 14 as closer to a Wally Richardson than the “worst quarterback in program history” that was thrown around a lot around message boards back in the day.
So I ask these questions for you to ponder this week?
In retrospect, who were the most underrated players in program history? Or maybe the guys who are totally forgotten. I picked the photo for this post on purpose as you’ll notice Morelli handing off to Rodney Kinlaw, who became just the 11th running back in program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
Similarly, who were the most overrated players in program history? I have my thoughts on this one, but I also have a hard time ever knocking a player who donned the blue and white and gave it the old college try. I understand that many of you commenters don’t think the same way, so enjoy having that debate.
Lastly, what about properly rated? Maybe the hardest bucket to fill. But, who do you think history has remembered most correctly? And the correct answer here is, in fact, Michael Mauti.
Have at it commenters – I’m ready to read your takes.
