Legends had it that when Awing people settled in ” Alaameti” , they discovered a lake. Marveled with the discovery, they were prohibited from dumping refuse into the lake.
As days went by, the lake disappeared reasons being that a woman had violated the rules by dumping refuse into the lake causing it to leave it’s site.
One early morning, a palm wine tapper named Mbanka was returning from his rafia bush when he met a stranger and his family, who asked for a sip of his palm wine which was offered by Mbanka.
After drinking, the strangers said ” I thought you were going to be malicious like the woman who dumped her dirt on us . To reward you, I give you this whistle and bell. Take them home and anytime you are looking for me, climb the hill, blow the whistle and ring the bell twice and we shall appear to recieve that gift you will bring to us. ”
With this, Mbanka rushed to the palace to explain his encounter to the Fon. The Fon then summoned some elders and they rushed to the hill top and did as the old man had told Mbanka.
To their greatest surprise, the pool of water emerged like the first rays of the morning sun. A soothsayer led the fon and the delegation to the spot where rituals were performed after which they returned home without looking back, to feast and make Merry for the rediscovery of their ancestors.
